Columbia Icefields:
The Columbia Icefield is the largest of the chain of icefields along the Great Divide separating Alberta and British Columbia. Columbia Icefields is home to the some of the tallest peaks in Alberta, Mt. Columbia, North Twin, South Twin, Mt. Kitchener, The Stuttfields, Mt. Bryce, Snow Dome and the The Athabasca Glacier. Visitors are warned NOT to walk out onto the glacier. Guided tours are available.
Maligne Lake:
The longest and the deepest lake in the Rockies, Maligne Lake is known internationally for its deep azure colour and snow-capped mountains. Maligne Lake is the second largest glacier-fed lake in the world, stretching 22km (14 mi.).
There are more than 1200 kilometres (660 miles) of hiking trails (both overnight and day trips), and a number of spectacular mountain drives.
The Icefields Parkway is kept open year-round, but gas, food, and lodging services are available almost only near the towns of Banff, Jasper and Lake Louise. Wide shoulders and frequent hostels along the Parkway make it an excellent bicycling route, too. For two hundred and thirty kilometres, from Lake Louise to the Jasper townsite, the Parkway winds along the shoulder of the Great Divide and passes by the spectacular mountains of the Eastern Main Ranges of the Canadian Rockies. It follows the headwaters of three major rivers and crosses two major passes en route.
Jasper is an internationally recognized four-season destination with so much to see and do to suit everyone's tastes. Whatever spectacular time of year you choose to visit - just be sure you plan to stay awhile. You'll want to have enough time to enjoy Jasper's many exceptional offerings.
The closest international airport would be Edmonton which is approximately 360km east of Jasper. The next closest is Calgary, approximately 480km south east of Jasper. |
