Koumuckthay, the original name of Comox, means "land of plenty" or "abundance" and that is a perfect description of the vacation possibilities that area available in The Comox Valley.

The area which encompasses Comox, Courtenay, and Cumberland, as well as CFB Comox and has Strathcona Provincial Park, Forbidden Plateau, Mount Washington, Denman Island, and Hornby Island nearby, is active year-round with skiing, tobogganing, fishing, hiking, golfing and much more.

The mild Mediterranean like climate with an average maximum temperature of 23 degrees Celsius (73.4 F), an average minimum of 12 degrees (53.6F), and a January mean temperature of 2 degrees Celsius means the year-round recreational activities change along with the weather patterns.

To reach the Comox Valley area there are several alternatives and most involve a ferry ride and then a car, bus or train ride. The first step is to get onto Vancouver Island. This can be accomplished by taking a ferry from Port Angeles, WA; Seattle, WA; Anacortes, WA; or Tsawassen, BC to Victoria or from Tsawassen or Horseshoe Bay to Nanaimo or from Powell River, BC to near Comox.

If you arrive on Vancouver Island in Victoria and have a car then take the scenic trip north over the Malahat, past Duncan to Nanaimo on Hwy 1 or catch the ferry from Brentwood Bay to Mill Bay and then proceed north on Hwy 1 past Duncan and onto Nanaimo. Once in Nanaimo go north on Hwy 19 for about 100 kilometres (62.5 miles) and you will have arrived in the area.

From Vancouver International Airport YYJ, scheduled air flights are available to Comox Valley Airport YYQ and from many harbours in British Columbia, seaplane charter companies are available to transport you to your destination.

Another is to arrive by boat at the Comox Marina with its complete facilities.

When you visit you will find an area with a population of around 70,000 and enough activities and facilities to keep you well entertained. The area boasts a full range of accommodations, services, shops, galleries, restaurants and nightclubs. Be sure to allow plenty of time on your Island visit in order to fully appreciate the serenity and beauty this region has to offer.
