Castlegar  - The Heart of The Kootenays
Castlegar is located a the confluence of two mighty rivers, the Columbia and the Kootenay, is midway between Vancouver and Calgary, at the junction of Highways 3 and 22, is less than 3 hours from Spokane and is home to the regional airport, so it is no wonder it is called "The Heart of The Kootenays". Within easy reach of a wide array of recreational activities and with many unique attractions Castlegar is an excellent city to visit.

Among Castlegar's attractions is the Doukhobor Village Heritage Museum which is a reconstruction of an original Doukhobor community or the Zuckerman Island Heritage Park where you can learn about Castlegar's human and natural history and how one man duplicated a bit of old Russia right in Castlegar. You can also visit the CPR Museum to relive the heyday of rail and Steamship travel or tour the Hugh Keenleyside Dam during the summer.

Golfers will enjoy the challenges of Castlegar's 18-hole course, set in a picturesque valley with spectacular mountain views in all directions. Golf digest gave the course a 3.5 rating. Other recreational activities include kayaking the rapids of the Slocan River or testing the "Brilliant Dam Hole" site of the 1995 Canadian Whitewater Championships or a visit to Syringa Creek Provincial Park to camp, hike, mountain bike or fish.

Any visit to Castlegar would not be complete without observing the herds of mountain sheep that have taken up residence along the shores of Arrow Lake. And don't forget the excellent trout fishing.
