Trail
- The Silver City |
Trail
was established in the 1890s when a small smelter was constructed
above the Columbia River to serve the rich mines of Rossland. Now
the largest non-ferrous lead and zinc smelter in the world has just
celebrated its Centennial of Smelting. The city is on Highway 38 off
Crowsnest Highway 3. Highway 38 is a side route off HIghway 3 between
Salmo and Christina Lake.
In the early 1900s many Italian immigrants migrated to Trail and this has lent to its distinctive character. On the second weekend of May the city holds Silver City Days and grape stomping, parades, and pasta dinners are the order of the day. The Italian heritage is also reflected in many of Trail's superb restaurants where you can find pizza, lasagna, and "The Greatest Spaghetti Dinner in the World". Exquisite pastries are also available at the specialty bakeries. Hiking on mountain trails or golfing on one of the two superb courses are among the outdoor activities to enjoy. Swimming in the two nearby lakes (both have Provincial Parks with camping facilities), fishing the Columbia River or world class downhill or cross-country skiing at Red Mountain, just 10 km (6.25 mi) away, are other recreational possibilities. The Cominco smelter and the local dams offer guided tours. Shoppers will be pleased with the wide variety of products and the ample parking and don't forget to visit the newly erected Monument of Champions, you'll be amazed at some of the names who have excelled in their field. Take
advantage of Trail's famous reputation for friendliness and civic
pride and enjoy a visit to the "Home of Champions".
