Touring Duncan and The Cowichan Valley
| There are many different tours to be taken
in the Cowichan Valley and many ways to take them. On Canada Street in
Duncan you can visit, at no cost, the Cowichan Valley Museum with its turn
of the century general store and pioneer possessions. After checking out
the caboose on the site you can then began a walking tour of the over 40
totems in the city, by following the yellow footprints or by taking a free
guided tour. Along the way you will see a totem measuring 24 feet in height
by 7 feet in diameter which is the world's largest totem in diameter (fattest).
Many different forestry related tours are offered, such as the tour of the Crofton Pulp & Paper Mill in Crofton. This tour offers the chance to see a mill where millions have been spent to protect the environment and paper is made at 75 km per hour (46.875 mph). The Cowichan Sawmill in Youbou offers the chance to find out, and see, what a dry land sort is and see wood cut, for export, using modern technology . There are even overnight tours where you will visit an active logging site, walk through a second growth forest and visit a mill. With a little planning and insight you may also create your own tour depending on your own interests. Possibilities include a historic tour, a golf tour, or a biking tour. Other tours you may take include the "Vineyards and Cideries of the Cowichan Valley" and even one, two, or five day tours of the Valley with wine tastings and meals included. Other area communities include Shawnigan Lake, Port Renfrew, Cobble Hill, Cowichan Bay, Genoa Bay, Maple Bay, Chemainus, Lake Cowichan, Honeymoon Bay and Ladysmith. |
