In the heart of the High Country region is the city of Kamloops. This city of over 75,000, called the "meeting place" from the Shuswap Indian word. Located in a valley where the North and South Thompson Rivers meet, as well as three major highways and two rail lines.
The Kamloops Wildlife Park is home to over 65 species of local and endangered animals. In the city stroll along the riverside where you can dine at street side cafes and restaurants and shop for local products.
In the winter months you can enjoy spectacular alpine and cross country skiing on marked trails or you can cut your own. Not only is Kamloops known for being a farming and ranching area which has its own cattle brand, in the early 80s a test crop of ginseng was started and has now become a large cash crop for the area farmers. You will notice in the fields black awnings that cover miles of farmland to protect the crop. Guest ranches are scattered throughout the region where you can experience the outdoor life and even a cattle drive or two in the fall. |
