The Richmond Arts Centre, located in the Richmond Library and Cultural Centre,
is home to nine studios used for everything from painting to silver
smiting. The Art Gallery features contemporary art by local and international
artists. Tours provide young and old with opportunities to meet artists
as well as create their own art.
A community museum in the area's first bank building has a "general store"
display that includes a working post office. In downtown Richmond, take
time to visit Minoru Park's graceful ponds, gardens and chapel. Richmond is also home
to North America’s second-largest Buddhist temple. The Kuan Yin Temple
of the International Buddhist Society, which is open daily, is an outstanding
example of Chinese palatial architecture and has a bonsai garden, exhibits
and Buddhist museum. Swimmers will love the facilities available Richmond. There are two indoor and
two outdoor complexes. The indoor facilities are the Minoru Aquatic
Centre and the recently opened Watermania. There are pools that vary
from 25 metres to 57 metres in length and have such extras as diving
boards and towers, rope swings, slides, saunas, a wave pool, whirlpools,
fully equipped exercise rooms, and steam rooms. For easy access Minoru
Aquatic Centre has water wheel chairs, pool lifts and portable stairs
available.
The South Arm Pool, open in July and August, is a large heated outdoor
pool with a three-metre slide, two super slides, and a picnic area with
a wading pool. Steveston Pool is a 25 metre outdoor pool with a 3-metre
slide, a teaching pool for the youngsters and a picnic area. Both outdoor
pools have barbecues, in the picnic areas that are available upon request.
spend a day relaxing in Steveston Village. Walk the piers where fishermen sell fresh fish from their boats and then stop for a seafood lunch. You can get an excellent view of the Fraser River when you visit, its oldest
structure, the former Britannia Cannery and Shipyard.
Another cannery to visit is the Gulf of Georgia Cannery, which with its exhibits, displays,
artifacts and guided tours recognizes the historic contribution of the West Coast fishing industry.
You’ll see massive machinery that was used for salmon canning and get a real feel for the life and operation of
a cannery.
Other historic sites to visit are
London Heritage Farm, and the Trev
Deeley Motorcycle Museum. London Heritage Farm has ever evolving
displays, restorations, and furnishings to illustrate rural life in
Richmond before 1900. Car #1220, built in St. Louis Missouri, was purchased
by the BC Electric Railway Company to carry passengers from Vancouver
to Steveston. In 1958, after of 45 years of service, #1220 was retired.
Now restored #1220 is on permanent display in Steveston
Park, on track originally laid by the Canadian Pacific Railway and
used by #1220 during her active years. The Trev Deeley Motorcycle Museum
has over 200 classic and antique motorcycles, stays open year-round,
and is free. Richmond is well equipped for fishermen with three public piers and a boat launch site that all havepicnic areas. The Sport Fishing Pier, London's Landing, and the restored CN Barge Pier each offer a unique perspective of the Fraser River and an excellent
opportunity to catch a fish. The McDonald Beach Boat Launch is located
on the north bank of Sea Island and has two launch ramps, public washrooms,
and a small concession.The Gulf of Georgia Cannery, a National Historic Site, was built in 1894 and now serves as a fishing museum. Nearby, the Britannia Heritage Shipyard another National Historic Site.
Every member of the family will enjoy the nine-hole public golf course located
in Hugh Boyd Community Park. There is a concession and golf supplies
are available. Its convenient location and many attractions make Richmond
